Microsoft is testing a new AI-powered audio translation feature in Microsoft Edge — and it’s one of the most exciting browser updates we’ve seen in a while.
What’s new?
Instead of showing translated text on screen, Edge can now translate the spoken audio of a video in real time.
Even better?
It replaces the original audio with a translated version in your chosen language.
So instead of reading subtitles, you just… listen.
How it works (in simple terms)
Once the feature is enabled in Edge’s settings, a small floating control appears on supported sites — YouTube being one early example.
Start a video in another language, and Edge:
- Detects the spoken language
- Translates it using AI
- Plays a new audio track in your preferred language
- Mutes the original speaker
All of this happens almost instantly.
Right now, it supports a limited set of languages — English, Spanish, and Korean — but even in preview form, it shows where things are heading.
The fine print (for now)
This is still early-stage technology, so there are a few caveats:
- Hardware requirements: You’ll need a reasonably powerful machine (around 12 GB of RAM and a modern CPU). Older or low-spec devices may struggle.
- Occasional quirks: You might hear extra voices or slightly awkward phrasing from time to time.
- Limited language support: More languages will almost certainly come later.
Still, for a preview feature, the progress is impressive.
