Perhaps you’re still holding onto Windows 10 for dear life, or perhaps you’ve embraced Windows 11 with arms wide open. Either way, you’re still playing the upgrade game, or at least you should be. And important to note, all Windows 10 versions are end-of-life in October 2025, meaning they will not receive updates. If you haven’t upgraded to Windows 11 yet, now’s the time! And if your hardware doesn’t support Windows 11, that suggests your hardware is old enough to be past it’s prime and optimal lifecycle as well.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 changed the way we upgraded Windows. Both Windows versions have multiple individual build versions. Along with the monthly feature and security updates, Microsoft initially released 2 full operating system builds of Windows 10 and 11 each year, typically around spring and autumn (the current version of Windows 11 is known as 23H2, released in second half of 2023).
Unlike the monthly patch updates, these complete builds can fully install the operating system. Each full build would expire in 18 months, forcing a new full build update. This design was intended to keep computers up to date to reduce security risk. With previous operating systems, it was easier to ignore updates, placing computers and data at risk. As all things tech must evolve, and hearing customer feedback, Microsoft adjusted the schedule to one full build per year with a two year shelf life.
Why Should You Care?
Here’s the deal: Microsoft will stop supporting older versions of Windows 11, especially for business accounts. No more security updates means no more protection against the latest cyber risks. You don’t want your business to be the next headline in a data breach scandal, right?
What’s in it for You?
By upgrading to version 23H2, you’re not just dodging potential security nightmares; you’re also supercharging your systems! The latest version comes packed with cutting-edge security features designed to fend off new threats, keeping your business data locked up tight.
But wait, there’s more! Beyond the boosted security, this update brings noticeable performance improvements, making your systems run smoother and faster—talk about a productivity boost! Plus, you’ll get access to new tools and features that streamline your workflows and enhance efficiency. And let’s not forget, staying updated means staying compatible with the latest software and technologies, ensuring your business operations remain seamless.
The Risks of Waiting
Procrastination could cost you—big time. Delaying this update could leave your business vulnerable to cyber attacks. Without those essential security patches, your systems are easy targets for hackers, risking data breaches and financial loss.
And while Microsoft might enforce updates after the deadline, especially for business devices not managed by IT departments, it’s always better to take control and update on your own terms.
How to Upgrade to Version 23H2—It’s Easy!
Well, nothing’s ever that easy. You may have hardware or applications that need to be addressed to support operating system upgrades (although in most circumstances, once you have Windows 11 installed, any future builds of Windows 11 should work).
If you have an IT service provider or managed service provider (MSP), they should be doing this for you. If they aren’t speaking with you about Windows upgrades and technology lifecycles, ask them about it. Or better yet, work with another IT resource that is more proactive.
1. Check Your Current Version: Go to Settings > System > About to see which version you’re running.
2. Back Up Your Files: Before updating, make sure to back up all your important data to avoid any loss.
3. Update Your System: Head to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then click on “Check for updates” and follow the prompts to install version 23H2.
4. Restart and Verify: Once the update is complete, restart your computer and double-check the new version in Settings > System > About.
Don’t wait until the last minute—consult your IT support resource and upgrade to Windows 11 version 23H2 now to keep your business safe, secure, and running at peak performance.
